Macho Mystic Meltdown Chapter 4: In a Muscle Mood brings the Manguni Body Building Club of 1950s Jakarta into conversation with Sartana, a Minahasan street network formed by former soldiers and migrants around Sarinah, Thamrin, and Tanah Abang in the early 1970s Jakarta. Sartana is remembered for its solidarity, protection of migrant communities, territorial power, and reputation for violence, and it remains notorious and a source of pride for some Minahasan people. The work approaches the Manguni Body Building Club as a possible proto-Sartana: an earlier social formation in which physical discipline, communal care, performance, protection, and masculine reputation are intertwined. Set in a restaurant inspired by Restaurant Trio in Cikini, central Jakarta, the work follows a charged encounter between a Minahasan deserter and a member of the Menteng elite—a Dutch-Javanese aristocrat shaped by privilege, cosmopolitanism, and cultivated respectability. Through food, bodily vanity, wrestling, costume, music, and sound, the work explores how trauma, power, intimacy, and vulnerability are carried across generations.
