Roman Selim Khereddine
Breeder portrays a once-renowned dog breeder and scion of Italy’s royal family. Intrigued by an old photograph of a man posing with a group of Neapolitan mastiffs in front of a Roman palazzo, Roman Selim Khereddine tracks down the photograph’s central figure in an attempt to restage the scene. Ousted from the palazzo because of the smell and noise of his kennel, the breeder has since retreated to the Umbrian countryside. It is there that the artist films the aged aristocrat surrounded by the last specimens of his fading bloodline of mastiffs. The work explores the act of beholding and being beheld, the split between being and appearance, and the making and unmaking of an image.
