Founded in 1985, BIM is a pioneering event deeply rooted in Geneva’s cultural landscape. Today, it ranks among the major events dedicated to the moving image, both in Switzerland and internationally.
In 2009, the City of Geneva entrusted the organization and development of the Biennale to the Centre d'Art Contemporain Genève, which reimagined the format and transformed the BIM into a production platform, thereby enabling artists to push the boundaries of traditional media. The originality of the new BIM lies in the fact that it consists exclusively of new works for which the Centre serves as both commissioner and producer.
Presented since 2014 in the Centre’s exhibition spaces, the Biennale and its works have been touring internationally, appearing at major contemporary art institutions, biennials, and film festivals. In 2026, while the Centre is undergoing a complete renovation, the BIM is co-produced with the Kamel Lazaar Foundation and premieres in Tunis.
In 2027, the BIM will resonate throughout Geneva, taking place at several iconic venues: at L’Arcade of the Centre, at the Art Genève fair, and at Léman Express train stations as part of the Mire project, supported by the Fonds cantonal d’art contemporain (FCAC).
